Umeå’s year as Capital of Culture draws to a close, and the the city's first major festival of 2015 is the folk music festival Umefolk 19-22 February.

“The genre of folk music and folk dance has gone global. Umefolk wants to reflect the breadth and diversity offered by the Swedish folk and world music scene”, says Lisa Lestander, festival project manager for the tenth time.

Distant performers visiting Umeå include VOŁOSI from Poland, The Goodbye Girls from the US and the Jacky Molard Quartet from France.

Party big band Sallyswag is returning. This band formed for last year's Umefolk and Folk & World Music Gala. Since then, they’ve had a busy tour schedule.

Young groups

Umefolk wants to highlight the local folk music scene, which is the real origin of the folk music festival in Umeå.

“With Umefolk being a major folk music event in Sweden, it is especially important to make room for new, young groups,” says Lisa Lestander, project manager for Umefolk.

An evening in Äpplet

A new feature of the festival is an evening of folk music in the restaurant Äpplet, with musicians from Umeå Music School, Midgårdsskolan and 15 countries in Etno Caravan. This wide-ranging concert includes influences from around the world and builds on this summer’s Etno Histeria Umeuropa Caravan and Folkskandia Project with both huge orchestras and smaller constellations.

“After three years of Allspel, we want to do something different. A slightly more intimate evening than what’s possible in the large Idun Auditorium,” says Anton Teljebäck, producer of Umefolk.

Even so, you’ll recognize many of the ingredients from Allspel, and everyone with an instrument is encouraged to join in on some of the tunes during the evening.

Dancing at Umefolk

There will be two stages dedicate to dance in its various forms. For the first time we are partnering with the Umeå Salsa Club to offer a few hours of salsa dancing and a salsa workshop for beginners.

Equality Festival

Umefolk continues to focus on gender equality on stage.
“We see a growing gender awareness at more and more festivals and it’s about time!” says Anton Teljebäck.
